From Buster Olney’s Blog:
It has been presumed this week, in the aftermath of George Steinbrenner‘s comments to a reporter, that Torre is all but gone — and he still may be. And it may be that as Hank and Hal Steinbrenner sit at the table for organizational meetings later this week, or early next week, they will look at the pros and cons of all the alternatives and say: You know what? There is no candidate on our list who is better than Joe Torre.
Consider all the qualifications needed for the job: An aptitude in handling a pitching staff; an aptitude in handling players; an aptitude for dealing with the enormous media pressures in New York; the confidence and ability to cope with the Jekyll-Hyde nature of the New York response to wins and losses; and a profile large enough to suit the Steinbrenners. There is probably only one manager who is a perfect fit, and Jim Leyland already has a job, managing Detroit Tigers.
So maybe the tide will shift back in Torre’s direction, as this plays out. “The longer it drags out, the more likely it is that I think that Joe stays,” said one official.
